LIEWEN LABORATORIES
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)

The Current Locations of both facilities-the first in Bavan, the second to the North.
Formerly a single research facility run by the eponymous Dr. Liewen (yes, THAT Liewen-his Son is Elias, the '4th God'), Liewen Laboratories has undergone numerous changes in staffing, even expanding to a second location some time ago. Though they have yet to succeed in their goal of producing a cure for the monster condition, they work hard to help with various other matters as well-from constructing devices to make every-day life more functional for the bestial population, to researching the origins of the Gods themselves.
ALL WORKERS RECEIVE, AT MINIMUM
There are two facilities under Laboratory control; the main location, stationed in Bavan, employs both monsters and humans. The second, smaller location however, is located farther to the north of the city, about halfway to the small coastal wood, and employs ONLY monsters.
BAVAN LOCATION

There are a few more buildings surrounding this one, but most have felt it safer to avoid proximity.
The Liewen Laboratories' main building can be found in the downtown business district in Bavan. Its front entrance is a public entrance, open until about 7PM each evening, while its rear entrance is a staff-only entrance that can be entered any time with an authorized keycard.
Ground floor - lobby, meeting rooms, public records room
The first floor contains all of the lab's public areas. Entering through the front doors leads to the lobby. Some potted plants give a little color to the room, and on the front desk and some surrounding racks, people can find copies of science magazines, job application forms, and pamphlets describing the laboratory's history and Dr. Liewen's many achievements (with a section on the back explaining how to become a financial supporter).
In the center of the room is a desk with a (human) receptionist willing to help with various inquiries. Here, one can request information about the lab's projects, submit a job application, volunteer to donate, etc. To the left is a hallway with several meeting rooms, and to the right is the public records room, where visitors may view records but may not remove them (it is permitted to make copies, however). Beyond the front desk is an elevator which can only be activated with an employee keycard.
Middle floors - employee workstations, laboratory equipment, etc
Each department has its own floor with individual workstations for each employee. Everyone gets a cubicle which provides some small amount of privacy, manuals explaining the uses of each major device in their department, and whatever tools they need. Larger or more expensive tools are kept in shared areas.
(Players of lab workers can feel free to decide what kind of equipment or facilities your character has at their disposal, so long as it isn't anything too anachronistic - everything but the RSDOS devices should resemble either technology FROM the 1950s, or at the very least technology they imagined would exist in a sci-fi setting.)
Upper floor - director's office, security office
This floor includes the only two rooms inaccessible with a regular employee keycard.
The director's office has had its plate replaced with a metal slate reading 'NOA KAIBA'. The interior of the office is neat and organized with files in appropriate cabinets, an open laptop on the desk, and various forms stacked neatly in a pile, most of them usually completed. (Noa's habits aren't far from Light's, in this regard) Furnishings, rather notably, have been altered to better suit a quadruped however.
The security office contains records of keycard usage throughout the building, surveillance feeds, and alarm controls. Liewen Laboratories has what may be the most sophisticated security system in Ryslig...but unfortunately, it's been known to fail at detecting monsters with incorporeal forms.

The Bavan Location has a set of added rules regarding Monster and Human interaction:
1) A monster may not enter the premises while 'hungry', and staff reserve the right to refuse entry until a monster has fed.
2) Human remains are not to be brought into the lab, save under unique circumstance with regard to ongoing experiments.
3) If rules 1 or 2 have been broken, a monster will typically be given a warning; however, staff reserve the right to terminate monsters who repeatedly break them.
Within the Main Branch location of Liewen Labs, there are Three Labs where a monster will most likely be hired in addition to open Reception, Security, and Maintenance positions. Certain divisions have had their responsibilities increased in order to prevent the question of 'progress' in the face of what naturally needs to remain unchanged for plot reasons (IE, extensive upgrade to the devices, successful cure...):
Network Development Project
- Requires some kind of knowledge or experience in one or more of the following fields: mathematics, computers, engineering, programming, or any alien equivalents.
- Duties include debugging and performing maintenance on the RSDOS system, as well as developing updates and additions to the user interface. Hardware accessories may also be developed.
- When new arrivals appear in Ryslig, laboratory workers may seek them out to distribute RSDOS devices to them.
- The actual source of the network (the fourth god/Liewen) is beyond the laboratory's reach and cannot be modified or influenced.
Cure Research Project
- Requires some kind of knowledge or experience in one or more of the following fields: biology, chemistry, medicine, zoology, or any alien equivalents.
- Duties include analyzing blood and tissue samples of monsters, developing experimental cures, and testing them in a laboratory environment.
- When new arrivals appear in Ryslig, laboratory workers may seek them out to take blood samples. For this, they often set up temporary stations in Vandare's hospital, or carry equipment out to remote locations by van.
- So far, lab workers have determined that all outsiders, both turned and yet-to-be-turned, share a common trait in their blood that none of the locals have. Unfortunately, they are unable to use that trait to tell which monster a given person will turn into ahead of time, and no effective treatment has been discovered (the last attempt was deemed an astonishing failure, with all equipment and notes destroyed).
Field Discovery
- Requires a willingness to travel, quick thinking, and the ability to adapt. A positive and social attitude is also encouraged, due to secondary responsibilities.
- Duties include traveling in a team to research various locations in Ryslig, including changes in the various towns, environment, and other strange happenings. Timely documentations of the discoveries is required.
- Every other month, field workers are additionally responsible for greeting New Arrivals once they appear, in order to provide them with aid and information. Exceptions will be for away teams who are researching possibly important developments.
- Due to the above, members of the Field Division may also work toward the development of improved aid packages and resources for newer monsters.
(Note: Due to the extensive OOC involvement required for full explorations, IC Explorations must first be passed through Mod Channels, specifically through the Plot Suggestions page)
NORTH RYSLIG LOCATION

The image above is of the building as it was originally obtained; the balloons have since been removed, and any remaining flags bear various crests from around the Rysling Region. The sign at the front has been simplified in shape and appearance, and now reads 'LIEWEN LABORATORIES'.
Liewen's secondary location is not open to the public, and entry to the building itself requires a unique keycard given only to employees of this building. It resembles a castle from the outside, and bears a large courtyard to this end.
Wall
The wall of the castle is in fact rather thick, and has numerous individual rooms located within it. In addition to chambers near the gates intended to house the impressive security systems within, most of the rooms here are in fact living facilities for staff who have chosen to make their work their home. Facilities include bedrooms (each with their own bathroom, most modified to suit each monster), a communal cafeteria, and a recreation room. The courtyard as well has a small pond that can be used by water-based monsters in a pinch.
Main Building (Ground Floor) - Reception, Receiving, Research Offices
Aside from the main reception desk, the ground floor acts primarily as a 'preparation' floor of sorts. In addition to mundane offices for those within the various research departments, much of the storage is located on this floor, and access in the back of the building to the outside exists for regular truck deliveries of substances both mundane and otherwise. There is also a large lift to bring cargo up and down within the building.
While they have a laboratory in the basement, most of the God Division's research is restricted to boardroom matters, and is typically located on this floor.
Main Building (Basement Floor) - Research Laboratories
Beneath the second branch are massive facilities dedicated to various forms of research. Due to the potential risks of each project, the security of the laboratories is highest here, and a breach within the building is considered a grave offense. Monsters working within these facilities may even require protective gear while working with substances in these locations.
While there is a laboratory division for all research departments, they are primarily divided between Magical and Medical research for the time being.
Main Building (Upper Floor) - Security (Turrets), Director's Office
In addition to small offices and consoles utilized only by the security officers of the building, a rather large office belonging to the Director is located here. It can only be accessed by the director himself-and similarly, the turrets can only be accessed by either the Director, or members of the security team.
Much like their 'sibling' in Bavan, the security offices contain records of keycard usage throughout the building, surveillance feeds, and alarm controls. Unlike them however, efforts to actually ward the building against incorporeal entities have been made...so breaking into them is far more difficult here.

As the North Ryslig location is Monsters Only, the rules applying to human remains and consumption do not apply. As well however, all monsters hired into the Second Branch swear an oath of secrecy regarding what they see within the building-and the staff WILL act against them if it is broken.
Monsters hired into the Second Branch, in addition to Security, Reception, and Maintenance, will be able to apply to one of the following three branches typically:
Medical Research
- Requires some form of knowledge or experience in one or more of the following fields: biology, chemistry, medicine, zoology, or any alien equivalents.
- Duties include material analysis, as well as potentially hazardous experimentation in regard to Rysling wildlife and substances.
- Occasionally, employees may extend the request for willing 'live test subjects'. These subjects are required to only ever be player based (ICly 'non-native'), as the experiments involved may end fatally.
- Current goals of the Medical Research team are primarily to add another level of cure research previously unable to be participated in within the limits of Bavan City; additional goals include response to potentially hazardous, scientifically based 'attacks' on the peninsula (IE; any incident similar to the Kulen Parasite, the False Fog of Bavan, etc)
- Due to the nature of many scientific matters in Ryslig, there is often an overlap with the Magical branch, and therefore a requirement for workers to be able to set bias aside and work well with their 'counterparts'.
- Due to certain habits of the 'Gods', there is additionally room for the occasional overlap with the God Research division; it is therefore required that employees be able to keep an open mind, and leave any religious bias at the door.
Magical Research
- Requires some form of knowledge or experience in the general field of magic, with a preference toward the latter if not both. Experience in a study of magical fauna and flora, as well as physically concocted remedies ('potions') is a plus.
- Duties include analysis of spellwork and otherwise unnatural sites/existences, such as seeming wards, 'corrupted' regions, and even living entities such as the 'Cursed Crabs' of Vandare's caves. Researchers may additionally perform experiments in order to attempt to counteract such matters, or at the very least 'improve' upon them. As with Medical Research, those in Magical Research may therefore seek out live, voluntary test subjects occasionally.
- Due to the nature of many magical matters in Ryslig, there is often an overlap with the Medical branch, and therefore a requirement for workers to be able to set bias aside and work well with their 'counterparts'.
- Due to certain habits of the 'Gods', there is additionally room for the occasional overlap with the God Research division; it is therefore required that employees be able to keep an open mind, and leave any religious bias at the door.
God Research
- While neutrality is preferred for the God Research division, followers are not refused a position, provided they successfully pass a battery of tests ensuring lack of bias in regard to the work.
- Requires some form of experience in general 'deep research', a willingness to search older resources within Ryslig, and general investigative drive. Due to lack of interest however, employees may be picked even from within 'University Level', provided they pass a small number of written tests.
- Duties include analysis of anything considered 'touched' by the 'gods' (IE; the Corrupted Zones, the abandoned city of Dyster), a study into the abilities of their followers, and a general attempt to research the origins and weaknesses of the gods themselves.
- Due to the habits of the 'Gods', there is considerable overlap with both of the other divisions within the labs, and workers in the God Research division will often find themselves utilizing those laboratory spaces for any experiments potentially required; for example, a magical object with ties to a god would be studied under Magical Research. The physical effects of various god related boons would be studied under Medical Research. Regardless of any lack of risk, the God related nature will always require these matters be observed within the Northern Branch.
(It should be noted that in all cases regarding Live Test Subjects, those volunteering are required to be made aware of the risks of what they are doing, lest the Labs invite a full strike from the angry mob that follows.)
As likely noted from the above, the potential to overlap with all departments of the Bavan Location exists-typically once work is transferred from one to the other (IE- a project deemed Too Dangerous, or Harmless), correspondence on the project ceases between the buildings outside administrative level. However, due to the nature of the Field Division, workers within the exploration team may find themselves working frequently with those of the North Branch.
If your character has been missed, and should be on this staff listing, please leave a comment below! Those whose muses are interested in applying to the labs may also comment here, and request a thread regarding the hiring process if they wish.
Players are also encouraged to comment if:
- You want your character to do something with the lab-As a donor/supporter, breaking into the place, etc.
- You have any questions about the lab, or you want something added/clarified here.
- You wish to include the Labs in a plot of some kind, which goes beyond the scope of a single player matter.
- Anything else!
